Audio Book Level Up or Die: A LitRPG Steampunk Adventure with FREE PDF EDITION!

I bought this book because I like the authors, so I took a chance on the genre (which I knew very little about). The pluses:This is a really well-written book. Self-published books are a gamble, but no worries -- if you want to start out knowing the book will make sense and the writing will actually be pleasurable (rather than, as is still all too common in books not produced by "oldpub") not be excruciating, have no fear to pick up anything by these authors. The characters are fun and interesting. There's not a whole lot of description (except of food, for some reason) but what there is, is vivid. It's very fast-paced so don't expect a lot except action, but the parts about the characters are compelling. You will care about them and they will be interesting (at least the main three -- although I assume the ones that continue on will be more fleshed out in the future) -- they are not cardboard excuses for fight scenes. I'm glad I read it.The bad: I discovered I really don't like this genre. The characters must, as the title says, "level up" -- but (spoiler alert) they do the same thing over and over, fighting more of the exact same monsters, until the final battle when they either level up or die. I am told this is not uncommon for LitRPG (and of course it's very common in RPGs). If that's what you like to read about, you will probably love this and find it a superior example of the genre, and if not, then you might not find the characters and plot, interesting as they are, strong enough to carry you through that much monster fighting. I will probably give the second a try to see if either the characters or the levels become more interesting, but don't see myself reading a whole series -- or, if I do, reading any other in the genre. But that's not a problem with the book, it is just not what I like best.That said, lots of fun. Definitely recommend.
